Poker Goals | November 2009
The theatre season is over; the harvest is in. It’s time to get serious about my no limit holdem (NLH) and pot limit omaha (PLO) games over the winter. I’ve gotten myself a new laptop with a freshly installed copy of Windows 7, Fulltilt Poker and, after happily using Poker Tracker for many years, I’m going with Holdem Manager for my statistics tracking needs. I’m currently using the 2 week trial period, but suspect that I will buy the full license if the first couple of days use is any indication. I’m very impressed so far.
I’m starting with a bank roll of $500 and, of course, the goal is to make as much money as possible. In terms of game selection, I will not be playing as conservatively as some people I know. If I’m playing fixed limit holdem I’ll be strictly playing at levels 200 times the big blind (BB) or lower. So, with my starting roll of $500, I’ll be allowing myself to play at the $1/$2 tables until I reach a bank roll of $800 at which point I’ll move up to the $2/$4 tables. I’m much less confident playing no limit and omaha cash games so I’ll try to be more conservative with table selection playing these games until I get into a comfortable groove. At this point, I think I’m going to go with 50 buyins (I’d love to hear your comments and suggestions). So, at my current bankroll level I’ll allow myself to play $0.10/$0.25 NLH and PLO cash games and $10 Sit and Go tournaments (SNG).
It would be nice to go into the New Year with a Gran Turino, but my first mile stone is $800 at which point I can move up a level. We’ll be closely monitoring the $/BB statistic in our Holdem Manager software to make sure, firstly, that it’s in positive territory and, hopefully, near the 2 mark when we’re playing limit. I’m not quite sure what to expect for no limit and PLO. I’m also shooting for around 10 000 hands played over the month of December.
